Wingfoil has been booming in recent years and as a retailer we have helped a lot of people get started. Over time we have learned many tips and tricks that have made life a lot easier for our customers.

Here are our 5 best advices

1. Separate hydrofoil learning from sailing learning.

Learning to master a hydrofoil is a sport in itself. Your progress in wingfoiling will be much faster if you have already developed some control of the plane under the board!

One way to start would be to incorporate a hydrofoil into the water sports you already enjoy such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, wakesurfing, etc.

Many people started behind a boat, a zodiak, or even a small outboard embarcation with a wingfoil board and a large foil. This allowed them to complete their first flights over the water while keeping a low speed.

Another way to get started with hydrofoiling is to take an electric foiling class to familiarize yourself with the feeling of taking off and gliding over the water.

2. For equipment, don't be afraid to go big!

Learning wingfoil is not easy, don't add unnecessary pitfalls: select equipment that is appropriate to your needs.

Oversized equipment will only speed up your progress and allow you to reach the intermediate level faster. Here's what happens when a client starts the sport with:

A board that is too small : Not being stable enough, the board will make you lose your balance continually and you will get very tired from having to get back on it. In addition, you will need a stronger wind to take off, which will require stronger conditions. The water will be more turbulent, therefore much less stable. In addition, you will have fewer possible days of practice.

Too Small a Wing : You won't have enough power to propel yourself across the water to get the hydrofoil off the ground. Being underpowered while wingfoiling is probably the most frustrating situation of all wind sports!

A hydrofoil front wing that is too small : The smaller the surface area of your front wing, the higher the minimum speed for takeoff will be, which will force you to practice in windier and therefore more turbulent conditions. The hydrofoil will also be much less stable once the board is in the air.

Keep in mind that no matter what gear you start with, you will eventually replace it once you reach the intermediate level (constant flights on both sides on the hydrofoil + first successful transitions). You might as well equip yourself with a set that will get you to that level as quickly as possible.

Finally, be aware that equipment that is oversized for one person is probably not oversized for another. It all depends on the weight and skill level of the user. Call us in store to define the ideal dimensions of your equipment. 450-671-5650

3. Choose a favorable wind and water body

Here are the ideal conditions you should look for when starting out in wingfoiling:

  • A “side-shore” or “side-on-shore” wind: It is much easier to get away from the shore in these conditions. You will need to get away from the shallow areas because of the hydrofoil under the board.

  • The ideal wind speed when you start wingfoiling is 15 to 20 knots.

  • A place with a water entry and a leeward exit: When you first try, you may drift and go downwind. Make sure there is a place downwind where you can safely exit the water and keep that spot in sight while you are on the water.

  • As little swell or chop as possible: Some locations favor a body of water whose surface is calmer even during strong winds. This will only help your balance.

4. Get a head start and familiarize yourself with a wing before your first session on the water!

Whether you’re skateboarding, skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, rollerblading or even just walking on land, we highly recommend spending at least 1-2 hours playing with a wingfoil. You’ll understand how its wind window works, where its power zone is and how to sheet in and out.

Also, if you have a paddleboard or a large windsurf board, you could use it for your first attempts at water. However, make sure that your board has a center fin so that you can keep your wind line.

5. Call on the experts

There are a lot of informative capsules on the internet to teach you the theory of wingfoil. Don't hesitate to watch tutorials and take notes!

We are also always available to answer your questions and advise you in your progress. A phone call costs nothing and could save you a lot! 450-671-5650
