Le Parawing : Un guide pour s’initier
Ce n’est pas une aile de wing, ni un kite à caissons, surtout pas un kite à boudins, et encore moins une voile de planche à voile. Mais quelle est donc cette nouvelle invention ? À quoi sert-elle, et surtout, est-ce fait pour vous ?
Après avoir réalisé nos premiers essais, voici ce qu’on en pense.
La parawing est née du besoin commun des pratiquants de wingfoil et de SUP downwind en quête d’un engin leur permettant de décoller facilement en hydrofoil, tout en leur offrant une liberté de mouvement inégalée une fois lancés sur la houle.
Ainsi, un kite à caissons miniature, sans border-choquer, a vu le jour.
Les premières itérations disponibles sur le marché mettaient l’accent sur la puissance générée par l’aile, ainsi que sur la facilité avec laquelle le rider pouvait la ranger une fois en vol.
Cela étant dit, les modèles évoluent très rapidement, et on observe déjà une nette amélioration des performances des nouvelles générations, tant en matière de stabilité de l’aile en vol que dans leur capacité à remonter au vent.
Le Pocket Rocket d’Ozone semble avoir la cote en ce moment.
Voici donc nos premières impressions, trucs et astuces, sous forme de questions-réponses.
La parawing, c’est pour qui ?
Pour les riders de wingfoil intermédiaires ou avancés qui cherchent à maximiser leur expérience lorsqu’ils ou elles surfent la houle. Le plus grand attrait de la parawing est qu’il est plus facile de décoller en hydrofoil qu’avec une pagaie, et que l’aile est ensuite beaucoup moins encombrante qu’une aile de wing une fois qu’on surfe la houle.
Est-ce plus facile que le wingfoil ?
Pas du tout.
La parawing présente plusieurs limitations. C’est une aile qui n’est pas équipée d’un système de border-choquer, ce qui signifie que sa plage de vent est beaucoup plus restreinte que celle d’une aile de wingfoil. Si le vent baisse de 3 à 4 nœuds, on ne peut plus redécoller. À l’inverse, si le vent augmente de 5 nœuds, il devient extrêmement difficile de tenir la voile pour remonter au près.
De plus, la parawing se « pompe » très mal (pour ne pas dire « pas du tout »), ce qui rend les décollages en vents faibles beaucoup plus difficiles.
Contrairement à l’aile de wingfoil qui offre un appui flottant facilitant la mise en route, la parawing est déjà en vol et nécessite un contrôle minimal à une main. Le rider doit donc adapter sa routine pour monter sur la planche et se lever avec moins de soutien qu’en wingfoil.
Arrive ensuite la complexité des lignes et du bridage qui, une fois mêlés, peuvent représenter un beau casse-tête (nous pouvons cependant affirmer que nous avons toujours réussi à démêler le bridage sans avoir eu à retourner au bord).
Puis-je utiliser ma planche et mon hydrofoil de wingfoil habituel ?
Le principe ici est le même que lorsque vous débutiez en wingfoil : plus grand, c’est mieux.
La planche idéale serait de type hybride/mid-length (voir nos mid-lengths ici), et son volume devrait correspondre au minimum au poids du rider en kilogrammes. Nous croyons fortement qu’augmenter ce volume de 10 à 15 litres au-dessus de votre poids accélérera considérablement votre progression.
Pour l’hydrofoil, nous vous recommandons d’utiliser l’aile avant que vous prendriez par vent léger.
Le but est de compenser le manque de puissance et de « pumping » de la parawing en surdimensionnant la planche et l’hydrofoil.
Si vous préférez garder votre équipement habituel et tenter l’expérience, nous vous conseillons alors de prendre une taille de parawing plus grande.
Quelle taille d’aile devrais-je acheter pour débuter ?
Bonne question.
Pour optimiser votre apprentissage en parawing, nous vous recommandons de commencer lorsqu’il vente entre 15 et 20 nœuds. En dessous de 15 nœuds, vous aurez beaucoup de difficulté à décoller. Au-dessus de 20 nœuds, le plan d’eau devient beaucoup plus difficile à gérer en termes d’équilibre.
Votre première parawing devrait donc correspondre à la taille d’aile de wing que vous utiliseriez dans des conditions de 15 nœuds.
À titre de référence, je pèse 85 kg et j’ai réussi à décoller avec une parawing de 5 m² dans des conditions de 15 à 18 nœuds. Ma planche était une mid-length de 80 L et mon hydrofoil avait une aile avant de 1200 cm².
Nous en sommes encore à découvrir le potentiel de ce nouveau sport, et nous en apprenons un peu plus à chaque nouvelle sortie sur l’eau. Mais selon nous, la parawing est ici pour rester !
